Repairing Crumbling and Failing Retaining Walls

what is a Retaining Wall?

Retaining walls serve to retain the lateral pressure of soil. More simply, retaining walls are used to hold back soil and substrate from moving due to the effects of gravity and erosion. Retaining walls are typically designed out of concrete, stone, wood (including railroad ties), vinyl, masonry, steel, or brick.

Signs Of A Failing Retaining Wall

Collapsing/Tilting Retaining Walls

Soil issues and/or poor construction are often the culprits for retaining walls that are tilting. This can happen if the footing toe is too small or if the wall wasn’t properly reinforced. Railroad tie retaining walls can begin to collapse due to wood rot or deterioration.

Most retaining walls require drainage “weeps”. If water accumulates behind the wall, this additional weight can cause clay soils to expand, leading to cracks and tilting.

ike collapsing/tilting retaining walls, walls that are separating from adjacent walls are often caused by poor quality construction.

A separating retaining wall may not have been designed to withstand the weight that actually bears on the wall. Poor drainage and inadequate reinforcement or connection to the adjacent wall are other possible causes. In unusual cases, expansive soils may also cause a retaining wall to separate from an adjoining wall.

Retaining walls can crumble for a wide variety of reasons, most related to the improper design of the walls itself.

Often, the wall was not designed to bear the weight load behind it. In the case of concrete retaining walls, the issue may be inadequate, weak, or poorly mixed concrete.

Concrete retaining walls may also have been designed with inadequate steel rebar, resulting in insufficient strength.

The Best Solution For The Problem

Wall Anchors & Helical Tiebacks We primarily utilize two proven systems for retaining wall repair:

OUR PROCESS FOR Repairing Retaining Walls

Site Inspection & Evaluation

A full assessment of the wall’s construction materials, height, retained soils, drainage capability, and extent of damage is performed.

01

Solution Recommendation

Based on the assessment, the most effective repair method (wall anchors or helical tiebacks) is recommended.

02

Hole Excavation/Drilling

For wall anchors, holes are excavated in the yard for earth anchors, and a small (1″) hole is cored through the retaining wall. For helical anchors, a hole is cut in the exposed face of the wall.

03

Anchor/Tieback Installation

The earth anchor or helical anchor is installed in the ground and connected to the wall via a steel rod.

04

Wall Plate Installation & Tightening

A steel wall plate is mounted on the interior side of the wall, and a nut is tightened on the threaded rod to secure the wall and distribute pressure.

05

Landscaping Restoration & Adjustment

Excavated areas are filled, sod is replaced, and the system can be periodically tightened to gradually return the wall to its original position.

What are the signs of a failing retaining wall?

Telltale signs include tilting walls, separation from adjoining walls, forward movement, buckling, cracking, crumbling, or rotted wood.
Our wall anchor and helical tieback systems aim to return the wall to its original position, and with periodic tightening, walls can often be significantly straightened over time. Full straightening may require excavation down to the footing.
Unless there’s extensive deterioration, repairing the wall with anchor or tieback systems is generally more economical and less disruptive than removing and rebuilding it.
Installation time varies, but some systems like Gorilla Wall Braces can straighten walls in one day. Our wall anchor installations are typically quick.
Yes, we provide warrantied solutions for retaining wall repair, with anchors often having a 25-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
